Symbiosis School of Biological Sciences (SSBS), Symbiosis International University (SIU) was established to address the need for a school devoted to training, research and development in the field of Biological Sciences. M.Sc. in Biotechnology
Full Time
2 Years


Program Structure & Highlights – 2017 - 19

Robust academics in Biotechnology includes the study of advanced subjects like Cell Biology and Animal Tissue Culture, Recombinant DNA Technology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Molecular Immunology, Research Methodology etc. to prepare the students with a strong foundation for high end scientific research.

1. OBJECTIVE To nurture, cultivate, promote biological scientists and create an ecosystem for innovation that enables development of technologies of social relevance.

4. RESERVATION I. Within the sanctioned intake:
a) Scheduled Castes – 15 %
b) Scheduled Tribes – 7.5 %
c) Differently Abled - 3%

II. Over and above the sanctioned intake:
a) Kashmiri Migrants - 2 Seats
b) International Students – 15%
5. ELIGIBILITY Graduate from statutory/recognized University with a minimum of 50% marks (45% for SC/ST) at graduation level.
6. SELECTION PROCEDURE Candidates have to appear for the personal interview

11. ASSESSMENT All internal courses will have 100% component as internal evaluation at t he institute level. All external courses will have 60% internal component and 40% component as external (University) examination.
12. STANDARD OF PASSING The assessment of the student for each examination is done, based on relative performance. Maximum Grade Point (GP) is 10.0 corresponding to  O Grade. For all courses, a student is required to pass both internal and external examination separately with a minimum Grade Point of 4.0 corresponding to Grade D. Students securing less than 40% absolute marks in each head of passing will be declared FAIL. The University awards a degree to the student who has achieved a minimum CGPA of 4.0 out of maximum of 10.0 for the program.
13. AWARD OF DEGREE M.Sc in Biotechnology will be awarded at the end of semester IV examination by taking into consideration the performance of all semester examinations after obtaining minimum 4.00 CGPA out of 10.

M.Sc. in Nutrition & Dietetics

An intensive curriculum focusing on Medical Nutrition Therapy, Public Health Nutrition, Sports Nutrition, Food Science, Nutraceuticals and Nutrigenomics, Functional Diagnostics skills etc. to create highly competent nutritionists.

Research

All the academic activities at SSBS are driven by diverse research activities. The faculty have strong research background in the areas of Cancer and Stem Cell Biology, Clinical Biochemistry, Vaccine Development, Metabolic and Bioprocess Engineering, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Micronutrient Deficiencies, Food Science, Maternal and Child Health, Nutrition Education, etc. Students are rigorously trained in various laboratory tools and techniques in these fields during regular practical sessions, summer training and the final semester projects. Most importantly, the vigorous research activities at SSBS are translated into numerous research articles that are published in top-indexed national/international journals. In fact many of these publications are co-authored by M.Sc. students underscoring the research exposure being offered to them.
