about us

about us “Diabetes and One Health”

Theme for the conference is “Diabetes and One Health”. One Health is a holistic, transdisciplinary and multisectoral concept where human and animal health is integrated with the environment. Global changes and human activities are responsible for increased environmental contaminants causing ecological disequilibrium and loss of biodiversity. This has further increased prevalence of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Correlation of one health approach with diabetes is required for the development of novel control strategies. Restoring the desired equilibrium and dynamics in healthy ecosystems will provide a framework for more integrated operational initiatives for the management of diabetes

Scope of The Meeting

  • Human Health
  • Environmental Health
  • Animal Health

Who Can Attend?

Students, Clinicians, Researchers, Educationists, Diabetes Care Providers, Veterinary Doctors, Animal Health Professionals, Industrialists, Policy Makers etc.

about us Director of Conference

about us

Prof. Vinaykumar Rale, M.Sc., Ph.D., PDFs (Germany), FIIM, FIABS Professor and Director, Symbiosis School of Biological Sciences (SSBS), SIU, Pune.Starting with initial work on Single Cell Proteins (SCPs), Yeast Diversity and Systematics (Doctoral), Prof. Rale shifted to “anaerobic world” during his first PDF at Gottingen, Germany, working on intricacies of acetone-butanol fermentation using whey as a feedstock. This research published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology (1986) is a landmark paper and is referred in almost all publications related to acetone-butanol fermentation even as of today. Continuing his interests in the ‘practicing’ world, Prof. Rale reentered into research and academics in 2008 with a stint at Deccan Education Society (Fergusson College, Pune as work place) as Research Director with multiple responsibilities before joining SSBS in 2014. With versatile and rich experience spanning over more than 45 years - in teaching, research, consultancy, administration, and techno-entrepreneurship and an excellent interface with premier teaching and research institutes and diverse industries, Prof. Rale accepted the challenge of playing a second innings. Under his leadership, SSBS has achieved, in a short span, a distinct place in the subject domain in teaching, research (extramural funding from Government), consultancy and industrial interface (industry-funded projects to develop knowhow and biotechnologies).

about us

Prof. C. S. Yajnik, MD FRCP Director of the Diabetes Unit at the King Edward Memorial Hospital and Research Centre, Pune, India. Prof. Yajnik is a diabetologist and a researcher who has made substantial contributions to the investigations of the high susceptibility of Indians to diabetes and related disorders. He is well known for his description of the ‘thin fat Indian’ and the contribution of nutritional intrauterine programming to this phenotype. He highlighted the role of vitamin B12 deficiency and deranged 1-C metabolism in the mother to these phenomena. He has initiated a pioneering randomized-controlled trial in Pune, India to improve micronutrient status of adolescents to reduce susceptibility to diabetes in the offspring.

Dr. Yajnik’s specialty is to set up multigenerational cohorts with high retention rates and collect extensive phenotypic information. He has facilitated the transfer of many research technologies to India from a wide range of collaborators from many countries and across multiple specialties. He has created a unique Biobank dating back to samples collected from 1987, spanning many cohorts and a lifecourse serial collection of blood, urine, stool and buccal smears (DNA, RNA, plasma, microbiome) in three generations in the Pune Maternal Nutrition Study.

He is a founder member, the current President of SNEHA India (Society for Natal Effects on Health in Adults) and a founder member and Trustee of the International DOHaD society (Developmental Origins of Health and Disease). He has been awarded Hellmut Mehnert award of the International Diabetes Federation (2009), David Barker Medal of the International DOHaD society (2011), Outstanding Investigator award of the World India Diabetes Foundation (2016), 41st Gopalan Oration Award, Nutrition Society of India (2017-18) and March of Dimes Agnes Higgins Award (2019).
