Director's Message

Welcome to Symbiosis School of Biological Sciences (formerly Symbiosis School of Biomedical Sciences) – commonly referred to as SSBS – situated amid lush hills at Lavale campus of Symbiosis International (Deemed University). SSBS was established in 2011 under the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (FoMHS) to address the need for a school devoted to imparting training in Life Science research.

The state-of-the-art research laboratories and mentoring by faculty members that possess domain-specific expertise and considerable postdoctoral experience are the USPs of SSBS. SSBS prepares its students to function as independent researchers to succeed in the ever-growing and challenging field of human health and disease. Therefore, teaching and learning at SSBS is facilitated through interactive discussions and exposure to laboratory-based exercises. At SSBS, we believe that there are no shortcuts in conducting good research. We strictly promote practicing a research approach that is systematic, logical, empirical, replicable, and ethical. We expect our students to raise the bar and set high expectations for themselves.

SSBS has collaborations with global talents from the industry as well as academia. All our efforts are targeted to inculcate a culture rich in research to stimulate innovative ideas via teamwork to honour, serve, and provide excellent resources to our students. The outcomes are evident in terms of the quality of publications in high impact factor journals by faculty members of SSBS and also by the number of grants from National and International funding agencies such as Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), Ayurvedic, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH), European Union ERASMUS+, Deutscher Akademischer AustauschDienst (DAAD), etc.

Overall, SSBS provides a unique opportunity and a conducive environment for students for conducting basic research that has clinical implications or that translates into innovation. We strive to transform Life Science graduates of today into responsible scientists of tomorrow. We hope that in future, we can serve our community through progress made in science!
