Short Report :

An outreach activity involving SSBS students on“Science Study Tour” , was conducted on Wednesday, 1st March 2023 at Symbiosis School of Biological Sciences, Symbiosis International (Deemed University), Pune, Maharashtra. This activity was in line with the National Science Day on 28th February 2023. M.Sc. Biotechnology students (BT2021-23 batch) actively participated in organizing and carrying out this activity. The aim of this activity was to spread awareness and motivate the college (XIIth class) students from the nearby villages for the science (Biotechnology in particular) study. Students from nearby villages lacking the exposure to experimental techniques used in Biotechnology got a chance to visit the laboratories at SSBS. Upon arrival, they got to have an interactive session with the SSBS faculty members who discussed with them about their research areas and the importance of biotechnology research in a simple language. Afterwards, the visiting students also got to see various laboratories at SSBS. They attended the poster session organized by M.Sc. Biotechnology students. Through posters, they were explained about the ongoing research projects at SSBS and its implications. Additionally, experimental demonstrations on various topics from Microbiology, Clinical Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Virology, and Biochemistry were also carried out for them.

Outcome/Impact of the activity:
The participating M.Sc. Biotechnology students got sensitized towards the importance of dissemination of theoretical and practical biotechnology related scientific knowledge to students lacking opportunities and facilities. Also, they realized the value of social activity directed towards motivating the young minds for Biotechnology research. Through demonstration of experiments to visiting students they got to address their curiosity and motivate them for pursuing career in Biotechnology for the betterment of society. The visiting students also expressed their renewed enthusiasm and interest in carrying out applied biotechnology research.
